Birding
Clearwater is a registered Birdlife SA - Birder Friendly Establishment & the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve has been listed on the South KZN Birding Route as a birding hotspot.
The Reserve and the farm cover a variety of habitats from riverine forest, rocky crags of the gorge, krantz grasslands, wetlands, streams and dams wherein aprrox 259 species have been identified.
Specials of the area include;
the Knysna Woodpecker; Striped Pipit; Narina Trogan; Corrister Robin; Yellow throated longclaw.
Botany
The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is recognized as a botanical hotspot with a biodiversity that has labeled it a part of the Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemism.

Spring time offered an unrivalled display of grassland flowerings and wonderful discoveries of flowering colonies with the riverine forest areas.
